Let’s face it. There’s stress everywhere. At home, at school, with our friends and with our girlfriends and boyfriends. Everywhere we turn, there’s more stress. But, sometimes stress can get out of hand. If you let it, stress can make you cranky, unmotivated, or even downright depressed. These ten tips will help you manage the stress in your life.

Accept Your Feelings – Nobody likes to admit when they’ve reached their breaking point, but it’s okay to feel stressed out. Everyone does at some point. Don’t feel like you’re admitting failure or a shortcoming. Just accepting that you’re under pressure is the first step to coping with it.

Keep Yourself in Check – Focus on what is causing you the most stress and what you need to do to fix it, or keep it under control. If more than one thing is creating stress in your life, prioritize your stressors and deal with them one by one.

Take Three Deep Breaths – When you’re really feeling stressed and you have to deal with something head on, close your eyes and inhale and exhale slowly three times. Those deep cleansing breaths will help you focus on the task at hand and look at it from a fresh perspective.

Focus on What You Can Control – You can’t control, everything. No one can. But there are some things that you can control. Focus on those. You can’t control that your parents are getting divorced, but you can ask them not to talk badly about each other in front of you. You can’t control that you’re having a test on Tuesday, but you can control whether you study.

Separate Yourself From the Situation – If you’re able to, go do something else for a few minutes. Sometimes just having a change of pace or a change of scenery can help you relax and calm down enough to come up with a solution to the problem.

Get Your Frustrations Out – Going to the gym and working out is not only great exercise, it also helps you get rid of your frustrations. Are you upset with that jock who called you names the other day? Think about him while you’re stomping all over the treadmill. It’s amazing how much better a little bit of adrenaline can make you feel.

Use Music as Therapy – Throw on those headphones and lose yourself in your favorite beats. Listening to music is great therapy and it’s very relaxing. Learning to play an instrument is also very calming, so if you’ve ever thought about learning to play guitar, now’s the time.

Take a Walk – Sometimes you just have to walk away, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Just taking a few cleansing breaths outdoors while you take a brisk walk can help you think through a situation.

Take a Shower – Have you ever noticed that you get the best ideas in the shower? Even if it’s not a solution you’re looking for, and just a break, the hot water will help relax your muscles and calm you down.

Talk to Someone – Don’t keep your stress bottled up inside. When you do that, it’s like shaking a bottle of soda. The pressure builds and builds, until finally it explodes. Talk to a close friend, a family member, or even a counselor. Just getting your feelings out will take the weight of the world off your shoulders.

Ignoring stress doesn’t make it go away. If you try to deal with a problem by forgetting about it, the problem will still be there in the background festering. Rather than letting it snowball into an even bigger problem, try one, or all of these tips to deal with your stress and knock it out of your way.
